New Moon, New Habit: Daily intentional solitude

Capricorn connects us to our sense of stability and security, often related to money and climbing the mountain of status. It also self-sufficiency and comfort being alone...the wisest sign of the zodiac it often craves time in solitude. Intentional solitude can be an incredible practice whether it be 30 minutes or an hour. Even if it isn't possible all lunar cycle, it can be an amazing way to honor this new moon, especially taking time outside and getting some space from family during all the celebrating.

Collective unConscious

The final new moon of the decade also creates an annular eclipse as the moon moves in front of the sun, though not completely like a total solar eclipse such as the one in July 2019. Instead it creates a "ring of fire" effect or a thin ring of the sun's surface around the silhouette of the moon and creates a partial eclipse before and after the annular one. The annular eclipse is visible mostly in the Middle East and Asian including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Guam in the early morning hours.

Astrologically, the eclipse and new moon occur in the tropical zodiac sign of Capricorn and since it is Christmas, I can't help but think of Scrooge from  A Christmas Carol. His seriousness, skepticism, and thoughts of scarcity reflect the shadow side of this sign...while being visited by wisdom from the past in form of ghosts--very Capricorn indeed. This initiation into empathy and seeing a new reality elevates Capricorn energies into the nurturer and supporter who values ancestors and family roots.

With Capricorn we feel a pull towards looking to the past for understanding perspective. The heaviness of Saturn-ruled sign can creep in on us when we become rigid or set on one version of reality that we believe to be the authority. The sweetness of tradition and this holiday spirit may also be evoked by this new moon, as it sits next to Jupiter it reiterates celebrating and the excitement of the season. Trine the rebel Uranus we may feel our pull for autonomy within community or eager for what is new and next in the new year.

However, the tension of this eclipse and new moon may show up around Chiron's square. As recently deceased Ram Dass put it "If you think you're enlightened, go spend a week with your family." Our core insecurities can unravel with Chiron, a sense of not feeling seen or the need for attention. Regression and trauma evolve in expression with Chiron, but they still exist.

Individual Integration

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Yule, or Kwanzaa...this new moon feeds the quiet before the Gregorian new year on January 1 or Lunar New Year on January 25. Honor the stillness of the season and see yourself when it doesn't feel that way with others. I suggest long, slow walks in nature or time with tea in front of the tree (rhyme intentional).
